PITCO MFL Inspection Equipment

Enhanced Signal Processing Software (ESP)

  • Detect and Repeat on Oblique Flaws- 30° OD and 20° ID
  • Accurate and Repeatable ID/OD Discrimination
  • Auto Calibration for Longitudinal System (available on both ESP and Standard M-Series)
  • Detect and Repeat on Smaller Flaws in ‘Noisy’ Pipe
  • Identify the Circumferential Location of Flaw

Scan Systems™ Corporation has fully embraced the passionate pursuit of advancing inspection technologies, and one of those advancements allow for the detection of off axis longitudinal flaws to a much greater degree.  MFL inspection systems of the past were unable to detect flaws in the pipe that fall greater than 10 degrees off axis as is standard with our M-Series product line.  Advancements that have been made now allow our systems to detect and repeat on 30 degree off axis OD flaws and 20 degree off axis ID flaws.

In addition, technological advancements found with our ESP upgrade allows for the determination of not only the linear location of a longitudinal flaw, but also the circumferential location.  These technologies will not only inform the operator of a flaw located at 18 inches from the end of the joint, but will provide them with actual degree from 0 to 360 indicating the circumferential location of the flaw.  This methodology also allows for the identification of multiple flaws around the same circumference of the pipe.

The signal to noise ratio of the pipe under inspection has always provided a limitation to MFL inspection technologies.  For instance, the rougher the surface condition, the more difficult it is to pick out the flux leakage generated by an actual flaw. Our ESP software has addressed this issues presented in the past with “noisy” pipe.

Sophisticated computer algorithms, hall element sensors for the longitudinal inspection system, and the ability to digitize, normalize and pre-process the signal within inches of the signal being detected, have all come together to allow detection and repeatability on smaller ID flaws in thicker wall pipe with noise generated by factors such as rough surface condition.

One feature that has been integrated into both our Standard M-Series design and the ESP system upgrade to help address this issue is to provide an auto calibration feature to the operator for the longitudinal inspection system.  The auto calibration feature has proven to significantly reduce the time required to calibrate when switching to another size, weight, or grade of pipe.

Digi-Pro Software

Digi-Pro DSP Software:

Digi-Protm is a revolutionary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) software product. Through a collaborative effort of PITCO technicians, engineers, managers, software designers, and customer feedback, Pitco offers the most cost effective and user-friendly digital Signal Processing system available to the pipe inspection industry.

Signal Collection:

Signals are collected and digitized within inches of the analog source. National Instruments (NI) cRiotm products are mounted directly inside the rotating head assembly and allow us to collect and preprocess the data immediately at the source.

DSP User Interface:

Depending upon system configuration, users may choose for up to 6 different charts for display and simultaneous operation: With the ESP Upgrade, the user will be provided with two charts for longitudinal (ID/OD), circumferential location chart, one trace for transverse flaws, two traces for wall thickness (localized and average), and one trace for grade comparison.

Standard features include;

  • Easy to us Command Center for all job set-up and maintenance.
  • Position based system
  • Up to 32 channels per chart segment (64 channels with ESP Upgrade)
  • Multiple threshold settings for each trace.
  • Variable gain settings for individual channels
  • Master gain settings for system adjustment
  • Audible alarms
  • Individual pipe tally
  • Base line adjustments
  • Multiple color marking for flagging Indications on pipe
  • Defect data entry
  • Print defect charts
  • Print prove-up charts
  • Print job summary
  • Enter comments for each joint on the fly
  • Easy calibration
  • Cal memory that remembers the previous setup for a given configuration
  • Onboard oscilloscope
  • Onboard internal diagnostics
  • Easy troubleshooting
  • Test joint run identified separately from production pipe
  • Archive jobs to CD ROM or network folder
